Welcome back, Laura!

Hey, Laura - We haven't seen you in AGES! Where have you been?

Oh, you know. Around.

Around where, like on a merry-go-round?

Kind of. It can feel like one in my head.

Merry-go-rounds are super fun.

They can be.

Well, anyway. We're all glad you're back. Especially Harddiskdriver, Lyria, and Tinkerbell. They love you.

We've never met. They don't really know me.

That's how it is with the biggest fans.

Tinkerbell certainly has a big...

Well Tinkerbell, *really* loves you.

In one form, I guess.

You don't like Tinkerbell's form?

I didn't say that.

Then what are you saying?

Nevermind.

Is something wrong?

Maybe.

Are we going to have to pry it out of you?

Maybe.

Just spill it. This is your Tribe. Your people. You can say whatever you want.

Its just that... life doesn't always taste as good as I do.

We're jealous.

Of what?

You just said you can taste yourself. Are you like a contortionist or something?

Forget it!

Cuz you know, that's pretty hot.

I said forget it.

Sorry. We're listening. Tell us why you're down.

I feel disjointed.

Is that like double-jointed?

Just stop!

But you're laughing.

True.

Don't be so hard on yourself.

Who says I'm hard on myself?

You stopped laughing.

Oh.

Anyone interested in having dinner in the city and then going to this?

If you want my extra ticket - please specify your interest. Bribes ARE being accepted.

---

Hi Tribe.net Winner!

Congratulations again on winning your pair of free tickets to the movie. Your full name will be on a list at the door and you'll be able to bring one guest with you. Please note that seating is limited and not guaranteed so I'd suggest arriving 20 minutes early.

DATE/TIME: Wednesday, August 3, 2005, 7:30PM
LOCATION: Embarcadero Center Cinema, 1 Embarcadero

THE EDUKATORS

In director/co-writer Hans Weingartner's sharp and funny social satire, two young German men, Jan (Daniel Brühl, Ladies in Lavender and Good Bye, Lenin!) and Peter (Stipe Erceg), set out to make a rebellious political statement by breaking into expensive homes of the wealthy, rearranging their furniture, and leaving cryptic notes like "Your days of plenty are numbered." When Peter's girlfriend Jule (Julia Jentsch) gets involved, the situation rapidly escalates out of control, and the three friends find themselves with a sympathetic hostage on their hands. A surprising, unpredictable film with plenty of plot twists.

www.ifcfilms.com

"THE EDUKATORS is that rare beast, a terrific movie that boasts intelligent wit, expert storytelling, delightful characters and grown-up dialogue plus suspense and a wicked surprise ending." -- The Hollywood Reporter

"The attractive cast also delivers very likeable performances, which convey the pleasure their idealistic characters derive from their militancy without ignoring the contradictions within their naive world-views." -- BBC

... and once again, I came back with no proof that I was there.

Somehow I never seem to get in any of the pictures.

I am a ghost.

There is rumor that Hazy actually managed to capture my ghost image once. I've yet to see it.

It strikes me funny that the one and only photo ever taken of me at Burning Man was also on Hazy's camera.

Much like the strange coincidence of running into Charlie's Chocolate Factory again. Same geographical spot. Same brain wavelengths at play. The same... yet so very different.

If that isn't the definition of trippy, I don't know what is.

...is full of surprises.

I'm sifting through boxes which I haven't seen the contents of for the span of several moves.

I open up a box and on the top sits a lone greeting card. I remember this card. New in town, unemployed, and unsure - I hung this card on my bulletin board because the message calmed me. It reads:

Worrying about all the little details will make you mutter in your sleep.

I nod as I ponder the astute wisdom of this simple message.

Until, I read what is scribed inside. I feel like I'm doing it for the first time. It inside reads:

So, send 'em off in a package marked "City Dump" and have sweet dreams tonight.

I can't stop laughing as I've been in quite a quandry over what to do with all of this crap I decided to pack away in boxes and haven't thought about since.

Moreso, for all of the time I had that card pinned to my bulletin board, I never realized it was a funny one!

Talk about a delayed reaction!

I walk all the way to my bus stop before I realize I've forgotten my wallet. ie. no bus pass. no cash. no bank card to get cash from the mini mart accross the road.

Irked, I turn aournd and walk home. On the way, I call james and brainstorm ways I might still make it to work on time. We can't come up with any.

I get home and praise myself for remembering my keys. Things could be worse.

Grab wallet. Jump in my car and park two blocks down from bus stop.

Run two blocks.

I sit. Wait. Wait some more. Check time. Wait.

Ah, bus!

I get on bus.

Huh? What are all of these children doing on my bus?

To bus driver "what bus is this?"

bus driver "C257. What bus do you want?"

"NX. I need off this bus!"

Doors open. I escape wrong bus.

Random guy at bus stop, "that bus goes to oakland tech"

Me: "I don't have my glasses on. I couldn't see the number"

Sheepishly, I put my glasses on.

I sit. Wait. Wait some more. Check time. Wait.

Ah, bus!

I get on bus. yay. No children.

I sit down. Check time. Only 8:05. Not bad.

I begin to relax and get engrossed in my book...

... until the bus stops and the driver walks down the isle, stops, and taps me on the shoulder.

Startled, I look up at her.

"Hear that beeping?" she says. "Your elbow is leaning on the emergency lever."

"oh, sorry". Sheepishly, I move my elbow.

The driver returns to the wheel.

Its raining in the city. I didn't dress for rain.

I check my bag and praise myself for keeping an umbrella in there. Things could be worse.

The walk to work is windy. umbrella and I wrestle the wind together. The wind is tough. We're tougher. Take THAT you invisible mass. Yeah, three can play this game. Watch it, um. He's got you in a hold.. little to the left, yeah, that's it. He almost flipped you. Its ok, I've got your back.

Victory. Um and I slide itno to the office just a tad later and wetter than usual.

Ah, what a morning.

New Virus

There is a new virus.

The code name is WORK.

If you receive WORK from your colleagues, your boss, via e-mail, or from anyone else, do not touch it under any circumstances.

This virus wipes out your private life completely.

If you should happen to come in contact with this virus, take two friends and go straight to the nearest bar.

Order drinks immediately and after three rounds, you will find that WORK has been completely deleted from your system. Forward this virus warning immediately to at least five friends.

Should you realize you do not have five friends, this means you are already infected by this virus and WORK already controls your life. If this is the case, go to the bar and stay until you make at least five friends. Then retry to send this on.

I think I have five friends, but am not entirely positive so I'm headed for the bar anyway.....it never hurts to be safe.

I can hardly keep my eyes open this afternoon. I'm drinking coffee in hopes it revives me enough to avoid having to prop my eyelids open with toothpicks.

It was great seeing everyone who was out at fire/drums this weekend. Some very interesting times were had. By all, I think.

I lost my monkey. haha. He has brown and white fur, carries a dragonfly on his head and answers to the name of "Chongo". He's from the Congo. Maybe he has returned to the jungle.

He said he was "Lone Max" on tribes.. but I can't find him anywhere. Does anyone know this monkey? He also goes by the name of Corey. If I don't find him again, that's fine - but if possible, there are a few things that it would be nice to tell him.

I still really like this one.

---

The following letters are taken from an actual incident between a London hotel and one of its guests. The Hotel ended up submitting the letters to the London Sunday Times.

---

Dear Maid,

Please do not leave any more of those little bars of soap in my bathroom since I have brought my own bath-sized Dial. Please remove the six unopened little bars from the shelf under the medicine chest and another three in the shower soap dish. They are in my way.

Thank you,
S. Berman

---

Dear Room 635,

I am not your regular maid. She will be back tomorrow, Thursday, from her day off. I took the 3 hotel soaps out of the shower soap dish as you requested. The 6 bars on your shelf I took out of your way and put on top of your Kleenex dispenser in case you should change your mind. This leaves only the 3 bars I left today which my instruction from the management is to leave 3 soaps daily. I hope this is satisfactory.

Kathy, Relief Maid

---

Dear Maid - I hope you are my regular maid.

Apparently Kathy did not tell you about my note to her concerning the little bars of soap. When I got back to my room this evening I found you had added 3 little Camays to the shelf under my medicine cabinet. I am going to be here in the hotel for two weeks and have brought my own bath-size Dial so I won't need those 6 little Camays that are on the shelf. They are in my way when shaving, brushing teeth, etc. Please remove them.

S. Berman

---

Dear Mr. Berman,

My day off was last Wed. so the relief maid left 3 hotel soaps which we are instructed by the management. I took the 6 soaps, which were in your way on the shelf and put them in the soap dish where your Dial was. I put the Dial in the medicine cabinet for your convenience. I didn't remove the 3 complimentary soaps which are always placed inside the medicine cabinet for all new check-ins and which you did not object to when you checked in last Monday. Please let me know if I can of further assistance.

Your regular maid,
Dotty

---

Dear Mr. Berman,

The assistant manager, Mr. Kensedder, informed me this morning that you called him last evening and said you were unhappy with your maid service. I have assigned a new girl to your room. I hope you will accept my apologies for any past inconvenience. If you have any future complaints please contact me so I can give it my personal attention. Call extension 1108 between 8AM and 5PM. Thank you.

Elaine Carmen, Housekeeper

---

Dear Miss Carmen,

It is impossible to contact you by phone since I leave the hotel for business at 7:45 AM and don't get back before 5:30 or 6PM. That's the reason I called Mr. Kensedder last night. You were already off duty. I only asked Mr. Kensedder if he could do anything about those little bars of soap. The new maid you assigned me must have thought I was a new check-in today, since she left another 3 bars of hotel soap in my medicine cabinet along with her regular delivery of 3 bars on the bathroom shelf. In just 5 days here I have accumulated 24 little bars of soap. Why are you doing this to me?

S. Berman

---
Dear Mr. Berman,

Your maid, Kathy, has been instructed to stop delivering soap to your room and remove the extra soaps. If I can be of further assistance, please call extension 1108 between 8AM and 5PM.

Thank you,
Elaine Carmen, Housekeeper

---

Dear Mr. Kensedder,

My bath-size Dial is missing. Every bar of soap was taken from my room including my own bath-size Dial. I came in late last night and had to call the bellhop to bring me 4 little Cashmere Bouquets.

S. Berman

---

Dear Mr. Berman,

I have informed our housekeeper, Elaine Carmen, of your soap problem. I cannot understand why there was no soap in your room since our maids are instructed to leave 3 bars of soap each time they service a room. The situation will be rectified immediately. Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience.

Martin L. Kensedder
Assistant Manager

---

Dear Mrs. Carmen,

Who the hell left 54 little bars of Camay in my room? I came in last night and found 54 little bars of soap. I don't want 54 little bars of Camay. I just want my own bar of bath-size Dial. Do you realize I have 54 bars of soap in here? All I want is my bath size Dial. Please give me back my bath-size Dial.

S. Berman

---

Dear Mr. Berman,

You complained of too much soap in your room so I had them removed. Then you complained to Mr. Kensedder that all your soap was missing so I personally returned them. The 24 Camays which had been taken and the 3 Camays you are supposed to receive daily. I don't know anything about the 4 Cashmere Bouquets. Obviously your maid, Kathy, did not know I had returned your soaps so she also brought 24 Camays plus the 3 daily Camays. I don't know where you got the idea this hotel issues bath-size Dial. I was able to locate some bath-size Ivory that I left in your room.

Elaine Carmen, Housekeeper

---

Dear Mrs. Carmen,

Just a short note to bring you up-to-date on my latest soap inventory.

As of today I possess:

On the shelf under medicine cabinet - 18 Camays in 4 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 2.

On the Kleenex dispenser - 11 Camays in 2 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 3.

On the bedroom dresser - 1 stack of 3 Cashmere Bouquet, 1 stack of 4 hotel-size Ivory, and 8 Camays in 2 stacks of 4.

Inside the medicine cabinet - 14 Camays in 3 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 2.

In the shower soap dish - 6 Camays, very moist.

On the northeast corner of tub - 1 Cashmere Bouquet, slightly used.

On the northwest corner of tub - 6 Camays in 2 stacks of 3.

Please ask Kathy when she services my room to make sure the stacks are neatly piled and dusted. Also, please advise her that stacks of more than 4 have a tendency to tip. May I suggest that my bedroom windowsill is not in use and will make an excellent spot for future soap deliveries. One more item, I have purchased another bar of bath-sized Dial which I am keeping in the hotel vault in order to avoid further misunderstandings.

German Scientists Probe Exploding Toads

Wednesday, April 27, 2005

BERLIN — More than 1,000 toads have puffed up and exploded in a Hamburg pond in recent weeks, and scientists still have no explanation for what's causing the combustion, an official said Wednesday.

Both the pond's water and body parts of the toads have been tested, but scientists have been unable to find a bacteria or virus that would cause the toads to swell up and pop, said Janne Kloepper, of the Hamburg-based Institute for Hygiene and the Environment.

"It's absolutely strange," she said. "We have a really unique story here in Hamburg. This phenomenon really doesn't seem to have appeared anywhere before."

The toads at a pond in the upscale neighborhood of Altona have been blowing up since the beginning of the month, filling up like balloons until their stomachs suddenly burst.

"It looks like a scene from a science-fiction movie," Werner Schmolnik, the head of a local environment group, told the Hamburger Abendblatt daily. "The bloated animals suffer for several minutes before they finally die."

Biologists have come up with several theories, but Kloepper said that most have been ruled out.

The pond's water quality is no better or worse than other bodies of water in Hamburg, the toads did not appear to have a disease, and a laboratory in Berlin has ruled out the possibility that it is a fungus that made its way from South America, she said.

Tom Hunter Concert

Last night, my parents and I arrived at the Congregational Church in Modesto to see my favorite children's folk singer. That, in itself brought back a lot of memories as its located right next to my grade school and home to many assemblies and afterschool meetings for my Brownie troop.

My fourth grade teacher recognized my parents and said, "Is that Laura?!" I wouldn't have recognized her either. She gave me the biggest hug. I thought she was going to cry. She's always been one of my favorite teachers. It was great seeing her again.

Tom Hunter was exactly the same as I remembered him - only difference being his cool seventies fro had been cut back and gone grey.

He told the same story about Fred the Turtle and got everyone singing the same songs. There was a new song which became my favorite. I may have to write to him to get the words. It was called "Coloring Outside the Lines". Great metaphor for life.

It was a wonderful night for remembering where I come from and the people and forces that influenced my earliest days. Someone in this tribe recently said to me, "your parents are hippies, right?" I laughed thinking that statement couldn't be farther from the truth. Yet, last night, as we belted out all of those old folk songs about peace and love together... I had to reconsider.

Should I start a blog?

I thought I should take a survey on this because if I do it - then there will be times that many of you would no doubt show up in it.

I'm grappling with questions such as "how private should I keep my life?"... and yet, the question isn't so much for me but for the other players involved.

Granted, I could start a blog and not tell anyone who knows me where it is... I could change everyone's names. I could gather up a whole realm of phantom readers in far off distant places.

Safety in distance. That's the phrase that springs to mind.

Or I could start a journal. That "thing" I've been saying I should do for years. Because why should I be sharing my thoughts with anyone else, anyway? My thoughts should be for me and me alone... I shouldn't "need" to be writing for anyone else... or so the little therapist in my brain likes to tell me.

Of course, I never have been very good at listening to my therapists.

If I start this blog, though... there's the possibility that I could really piss a lot of you off. I could embarrass you. I could say too much. I could simply "take things too far". I could do all of this without even knowing it.

I could lose friends.

I wouldn't intentionally write anything slanderous. And its not like my thoughts are usually hurtful.. However, my blog would serve as an emotional outlet... and the notepad for my national best seller, of course. ;-)

If I start this, I'd like to put the option out there for all of you to read it too. I think on some days, it could even aid in some communication and understanding between those I'm closer with. Yet, I'd like to know there was safety in that first.

Secondly, if there's anything that anyone would NOT want to see written about in a more public setting... I'd like to hear about that.

... a memorable memory that you each have of me. :-)

It can be silly, surreal, embarrassing, energetic, annoying, angry, hot, hair-raising. Whatever.

If you don't have one, that's ok... you might next year.

Age 3-4: Sit-n-spin

I loved that sit-n-spin.

In the years that followed, this love of spinning progressed into a ritual while listening to my parent's Beatles albums. I'd spin around in circles as fast as I could.. the goal was to get entirely dizzy. From trial and error, I learned that by tilting my head to one side, I could quickly reach that desired feeling of vertigo. My stomach would lurch, the room would spin out of control, and I'd have no choice but to fall onto the floor in a giggle-fit.

I'd wait about five minutes, get up, and repeat process.

What did you dream last night?

My dream / snippets I remember:

(This is the only dream that I remember ever having about my ex-husband since he got the "ex". I'm sure it was triggered by my dialing his phone number last night after four months of no contact. No answer. No return call.)

I'm sitting on a bed located in a highrise condo complex talking/catching up with my ex-husband. He turns and says something to a woman cooking in the kitchen.

Me: "who's that in the kitchen?"
Him: "That's my girlfriend"
Me: "Does she live here?"
Him: "Yes. We're so happy together."

He gets up, goes in the kitchen, puts his arms around her as she cooks. I sit on the bed watching them and start to cry.

I didn't think he'd ever get together with someone else. I thought I'd be so happy for him when he did. Why these tears? He's found domestic bliss with this woman. We never had that. I guess all of his therapy finally paid off. Look at them. They adore each other. Give it time.. she'll find out.... or maybe she won't.

I leave and go to work. I have a fifteen minute break and decide to return to the condo complex. Its right across the street.

I'm barefoot. I need shoes.

I'm in a hotel bar and there are piles of shoes all around me.

I pick out these shoes that are... well, beyond strange.

They're like boats for feet made out of cork. My toes fit up against the front with about four feet of boat stretching out behind each foot.

I cross the street towards my ex's condo building. Its sunny and warm outside.

I can't get to the doors because there's a fountain blocking my way. A really giant fountain. I'm standing on a concete block with waterways that seem to be running on all sides of me now.

There's no other way. I have to jump into the fountain. Its like a water slide, twisting and turning, pulling me along. Very cooling on this hot day. The boats on my feet float away. There are a lot of other people swimming around in the fountain too.

I get nervous when I realize my nipples are showing through my wet shirt. I need to go back to work soon. I can't go back to work like this. Swimming around in the fountain is feeling really good... but I left on a fifteen minute break.

I find a ladder and climb out of the fountain, only to get waylaid once more. This time by a giant beach umbrella.

How long until I get tired of just hanging out in my own tribe?

I don't think I've made this many tribe posts in a year.

And does this mean:

A. I'm self-obsessed?

B. Like having the spot light on me?

C. Attracted to new shiney things?

D. All of the above?
